STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — In Stafford County, three 1-year-olds were taken to the hospital last month after they were exposed to THC. Authorities determined that the children were exposed to the psychoactive compound at a day care. The owner of the day care, Rebecca Swanner, is charged with three counts of cruelty and injury to children. The day care voluntarily surrendered its license, police said. A Stafford County deputy responded to a hospital on March 2 after three toddlers were taken to the hospital. The parents took their children to the emergency room after noticing lethargic and uncoordinated behavior as well as glassy, bloodshot eyes. Staff members at the hospital recognized the symptoms and used testing to confirm that the children were exposed to THC. THC is the psychoactive compound found in cannabis. The three families used the same home day care in the Windsor Forest neighborhood, police said. A detective searched the day care and found Goldfish crackers around the children's high chairs. Police sent the crackers to a lab, which confirmed the presence of THC. Swanner, who owned the home day care, was charged. She surrendered to police on Thursday. The magistrate released her on a $2,000 unsecured bond, police said. Have a story idea? Email me at [email protected] with tips, questions, comments, or concerns.
