Description

Press release from San Mateo County Libraries: April 14, 2022 What is Autism? According to Autistic Advocacy, opens a new window, "Autism is a developmental disability that affects how we experience the world around us." The CDC, opens a new window defines autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a developmental disability caused by cognitive differences that can impact a person's social skills, communication and understanding of what behaviors are expected in school or work. It is estimated that one in 44 children at the age of 8 is identified with ASD. Autism varies and is unique to every individual who experiences it, and every person may have ways of learning concepts that are different from those without ASD. Though a doctor can diagnose autism, people without the formal signs of ASD can also have autism. ASD is not exclusive to one community. It is not exclusive to gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, income or religion. Yes, people with autism experience things differently! However, the reality is that we all do! San Mateo County Libraries strives to create and promote programs and services that offer greater access for individuals with disabilities, diverse intellectual intelligence and cognitive differences. We are committed to providing welcoming and accessible environments at our libraries and take pride in fostering learning experiences for everyone. To celebrate Autism Awareness Month and acknowledge the contributions of people with autism to our world, we are highlighting a reading recommendation list that builds awareness of the realities of autism. Here are some fiction and nonfiction titles by and for individuals on the autism spectrum and resources that can help you learn more about autism, acceptance, and inclusion.
