Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today: One man is dead and three other people were hospitalized after a shooting early Sunday morning in Sacramento County. Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said the shooting happened at the the 7200 block of Franklin Boulevard at around 12:16 a.m. First responders pronounced a man dead at the scene while two other people were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A fourth person, who's condition is described as life-threatening, was taken to the hospital by a private car, officials said. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information regarding this case to call 916-874-5115. (KCRA3) For the first time since the pandemic started, the Sacramento State community came together to show support for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. The "Out of the Darkness" campus walk for suicide prevention took place at Sac State on Thursday, April 14. The ceremony opened with speakers from AFSP, students, alumnae, administration members of Sacramento State and Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg. They shared their thoughts and personal experiences connecting them to suicide prevention. Sacramento State President Robert Nelsen stressed the importance of togetherness and helping others within the community. "When I say that we're a family [at Sac State], I mean it. Families support each other and we have a responsibility to be there for one another," Nelsen said. (StateHornet.com) A power outage in South Sacramento left over 500 customers without power Saturday night, according to SMUD. It appears that the outage may have been caused by a crash, however, the details haven't been released. (CBS Sacramento) Assemblymembers Ken Cooley (Rancho Cordova), Kevin McCarty (Sacramento) and Jim Cooper (Elk Grove) announced their efforts to address public safety on the American River Parkway after the brutal slaying of 20-year-old Emma Roark. Sacramento area representatives have introduced AB 2633, which defines parklands with heightened risk of environmental degradation and damage due to the unique and valuable resources within it, such as the American River Parkway, as "special parklands." This bill authorizes the removal of illegal campsites from these parks to prevent unnecessary environmental destruction and addresses public safety hazards. In addition, they are proposing $50 million in grant funding to go to counties and regional park districts to support efforts to protect the parkway. (Rancho Cordova Independent)Officials from the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD) are urging customers to be on the lookout for scammers claiming to represent SMUD and threatening disconnection if immediate payments are not made. Scammers are requesting immediate payment in the form of a prepaid debit card, or they say utilities will be shut off within 20-40 minutes. SMUD says that representatives will never call a customer and direct them to a non-SMUD payment facility or require a specific method of payment such as cash, wire payment or money card. If customers receive a suspicious call, SMUD asks them to ask for a name and number, then hang up and call SMUD at one of the following published numbers: Residential customers: 1-888-742-SMUD (7683) Business customers: 1-877-622-SMUD (7683). Customers can also email SMUD at [email protected] with the same information.
