Press release from the City of Monrovia: April 15, 2022 Hello Monrovians, "Monrovia Firefighter, Igor Nisis, is originally from Ukraine and upon watching news of the war, he felt compelled to assist those suffering in his home country. With the help of firefighters from Long Beach and Los Angeles, Firefighter Nisis coordinated a regional effort to collect donation items for Ukraine's first responders. These items include equipment and tools for first responders, first aid supplies, and other personal hygiene items. Last week, Igor collected enough items to fill five trucks full of First Aid Kits and baby supplies, totaling 18 pallets! Our Monrovia community is proud of our first responders and when they go above and beyond their normal work to keep us safe, I am overjoyed with pride that comes from public service. Igor, no doubt, is a driving force to ensure that suffering people are getting supplies and assistance directly from our community and others. And since the news story was released, he has worked hard to fill a second plane with supplies on behalf of all Los Angeles area fire departments! Igor, what else can we say but "Молодець" Sincerely," Dylan Email: [email protected] Phone: (626) 932-5585 Highlights in this Update Monrovia City Council Returns to In-Person Meetings 2022 Boards & Commissions Recruitment/Appointment Timeline SoCalGas Grant for Businesses National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week Mosquito Awareness Month Foothill L (Gold) Line Extension Update Save the Date: MAP-edu Community Meeting Arbor Day & Earth Day Celebration Monrovia City Council Returns to In-Person Meetings As you may recall, in 2020, the Monrovia City Council Meetings became fully remote as a safety precaution. Beginning on Tuesday, April 19, the Monrovia City Council will return to in-person meetings at the Council Chambers in City Hall. For those wanting to tune into the meetings, they will continue to be broadcasted on KGEM-TV and streamed on YouTube. With the return of in-person meetings, there are some changes to Public Input. The public can now attend all City Council meetings and provide public comments, in-person, in the Council Chambers. Public comments will continue to be accepted via email, but they will no longer be read out loud during the Council Meetings. However, the full text will be provided to all members of the City Council prior to the meetings. Community members can continue to provide public comments using the audio features through Zoom. Due to technical limitations, the video functionality will not be available. Those participating remotely may observe a slight delay in the live-stream. And to provide the best viewing experience, we do ask for Zoom audio participants to mute themselves to prevent feedback. As we return to in-person meetings w/ virtual and television feeds again, we ask for your patience and understanding as we may need to work out a few issues that could arise. Monrovia Conserves Activities such as leaving the faucet on while brushing your teeth or accidentally turning on the sprinklers twice in the same day may not seem like a big deal but can contribute to trillions of gallons of wasted water per year! Without conservation, the effects of the drought would be more swift and severe. Department of Water Resources Director, Karla Nemeth states, "… water conservation will remain our best tools in the face of this ongoing drought and the statewide impacts of a warming climate. All California must focus on conserving water now." When we water less, we are able to store more water for dry times. Since Phase II went into effect in March of 2022, the City as a whole decreased their water consumption by 5% in comparison to usage during the same months in 2020. But we are not yet out of the clear and with summer just around the corner, we ask that Monrovians continue to conserve. As a reminder, Phase II requires that you: Water your lawn every fourth day between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. the following day. Repair leaks within 48 hours of discovery, from indoor and outdoor plumbing fixtures. Do not allow run off onto streets, sidewalks, driveways or any hardscapes. Do not use water to wash sidewalks, walkways, or other hard surfaces, unless necessary for sanitation purposes. Do not use water to wash vehicles, boats or any motor vehicle by hose unless used with a shut-off nozzle. Do not use water to clean, fill or maintain decorative fountains ponds, or lakes unless the water is being recirculated. Water Usage Penalty Excess water usage penalties went into effect starting the first billing cycle in March 2022. The City has been expanding educational outreach for many months to ensure all Monrovians are aware of Phase II of the Water Conservation Plan and what that means for your water consumption and your water bill. As a recap, Phase II of the Water Conservation Plan stipulates a 10% mandatory reduction in water consumption from each households same month billing period in 2020. For example, the first billing period in March will compare your usage from February of 2022 to your usage in February of 2020. Tools to Help You Conserve Water Rebates - Save $$ when you save H2O!
