BERKELEY, CA — A Berkeley traffic enforcement operation Wednesday morning led to the arrest of a suspect on weapons charges, police said. A 28-year-old Berkeley man was arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm and having a firearm at or near a public school, police said. Officers found a loaded handgun with a high-capacity magazine during a traffic stop after the driver failed to stop for a stop sign near Malcolm X Elementary School, police said. Officers were conducting a distracted driving enforcement operation in the Ashby Avenue corridor in which they stopped 29 vehicles and issued 17 citations for improperly using a cellphone while driving, police said. The operation was held between 6 and 11 a.m. The operation was paid for through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
