PHOENIX, AZ — After a three-day manhunt, and an hours-long standoff, police on Sunday arrested a man suspected of shooting and critically injuring a Phoenix police officer on Thursday, police said. Nicholas Cowan, 35, was arrested around 7:45 p.m. Sunday, police said. Cowan was found in a rental property near 66th Street and Osborn Road in Scottsdale, following a citizen tip, police said. A team from the Phoenix Police Department's Tactical Support Bureau negotiated with Cowan for several hours prior to his surrender, police said. Police also arrested Nicole Montalbano, 33, on suspicion that she helped Cowan evade capture, police said. Cowan had been on the run since Thursday morning, when he was suspected of shooting a Phoenix police officer, police said. The officer, a 24-year veteran of the department, was still in the hospital recovering as of Sunday evening, according to police. No other people were injured in the shooting, which happened at a gas station near Cave Creek Road and Beardsley Road in north Phoenix. After police took Cowan into custody Sunday, he was taken to a local hospital to be treated for apparent gunshot wounds that were likely from the shootout with police Thursday morning, police said.
