TA said the committee members discuss books that have been published during the previous year for children ages 0-14 and vote for the prestigious Newbery Medal winner and Honor titles.
One of the highest honors at all levels of literature, the Newbery Medal is awarded each year by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
Martin said in a statement that serving on the Newbery Committee has been his dream ever since he attended graduate school at the University of Alabama's School of Library and Information Studies more than a decade ago.
"This is going to be an amazing experience," Martin said, "and I'm really looking forward to serving on this committee of phenomenal librarians. I cannot wait to start reading!"
The school then said 16 people were on the ballot, with eight elected to the committee — including Martin.
