NEW LONDON, CT — Police officers on the midnight shift were kept busy in the early morning hours Saturday, with two major incidents reported about a mile apart within an hour of each other. Just before 12:30 a.m., police were dispatched to a reported disturbance with shots fired in the area of Ocean and Lee avenues. Spent casings were found, and an area canvass was initiated. No injuries were reported, and the incident does not appear to be a random act, according to Capt. Brian Wright. At 1:33 a.m., officers responded to United Grocery at 237 Jefferson Ave. for an alarm activation. Upon arrival, police observed the front door of the store open and the automated teller machine missing. The owner of the store was contacted, and an area canvass was conducted, Wright said. Both investigations are active, and police did not say whether the two incidents are related or not. Anyone with information and/or video concerning these cases is encouraged to contact the New London Police Department at 860-447-5269 ext. 0. Anonymous information may be submitted via the New London Tips 411 system by texting NLPDTip plus the information to Tip411 (847411).
