BAY SHORE, NY — Japanese shabu shabu, a style of restaurant where patrons boil their own meat, seafood and vegetables in personal boiling broth bowls at their table, has long been a fun tradition in New York City. But Long Island's first shabu shabu is now open in Bay Shore. JBBQ opened at 11 East Main St. last week.
The eatery charges one price for adults and two for children—based on height—for all you can eat shabu shabu and barbecued meat for 90 minutes. To celebrate the grand opening, the restaurant is offering every party of four one free meal, until December 17.
The Japanese barbecue grilled meat style is called yakinuki. The kitchen delivers customers' choices of meat and sides to drop onto each table's hot griddle. Shabu shabu is sometimes called Japanese "hot pot" and is served with a variety of dipping sauces. Part of the appeal of shabu shabu is how extensive the menu of ingredients diners can sample and JBBQ follows this tradition with a huge range of meat, seafood and vegetables and a variety of broth flavors to cook them in.
