2nd School District In Suffolk Reports Cyberattack

BAY SHORE, NY — A second school district in Suffolk County fell victim to a cyberattack last week. Bay Shore Superintendent Joseph Bond announced in a letter to the community that the district experienced a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) cyberattack. According to Bond, this kind of attack involves someone attempting to flood the system with data in an effort to overwhelm the internet but not to take data. "There is no indication that there has been any kind of data breach of any of our systems," Bond wrote. "Our outstanding Technology Department is working closely with our service provider to solve this issue as quickly as possible. I would like to thank our dedicated teachers for continuing to work through this situation." The attack led to intermittent service disruptions within the school buildings, impacting both the staff and students. After the attack, school officials called the appropriate authorities so that they can work to investigate further. Under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, such attacks are illegal and can result in imprisonment and up to $500,000 in fines. The attack in Bay Shore came the same week a cyberattack also caused internet outages at the Lindenhurst School District.
