Description
Understand autism in new ways. Learn how to help. Attend a private screening of In A Different Key, a film by Caren Zucker & John Donvan. A Must See Film: This full-length, award-winning documentary film follows a mother’s journey as a journalist into autism’s past and present, shedding light on the needs, the gifts, and the dreams of the more than 3 million Americans living their lives on the autism spectrum. It tells the story of the first person ever diagnosed with autism, now an elderly man in rural Mississippi, and explores how his life story can inform our efforts today while also inspiring us to have the backs of those who are “different.” Why it Matters: This film beautifully explains “the why” behind Greenleaf NCC and puts a special emphasis on the challenges facing people with autism as they transition into adulthood. Children with special needs are often surrounded by school and other activities, but once high school comes to an end, all too often, so do their connections to the community. We opened our current community center in August, welcomed our first Austin ISD partnership program students (ages 18+) just after Labor Day, and have been running social creativity clubs and vocational classes throughout the past year. We have a lot to do in Austin to better foster the abilities of people with autism and related neurodiversities so they reach their potential and thrive in the community, in the workplace, and in life. This film offers a road map. All four screenings will be sensory friendly and have Alamo Drafthouse waitstaff to provide food and beverage service.
