Performances and Networking If you cannot attend or participate remember to donate toward this nonprofit music scholarship fund, a worthy cause! Thank you Christopher "Chris Beatz" Leath, the Mallory Family (Jasmine and Clement aka "Universal Mathematics"), Carolyn Williams and Terry Rorie as featured artists! Celebrating the performing arts every third Saturday in April and every fourth Saturday in September, The WSSU Foundation's Belinda S. Womack Memorial Music Scholarship Fund (Dr. DaBeth Manns) organizes and sponsors the Community Concert to emphasize culture and heritage through recorded and live performances across multiple genres of music. As well, on first Fridays, the Open-Mic Night event isprovided as a judgement-free and creative expression zone. Gratefully acknowledged is the venue host for renting its indoor facility for the open-mic nights and its outdoor courtyard seating for the community concert! Come prepared according to your usual rituals (e.g., hat, repellent, sunglasses, allergy meds, etc.). All public health and safety precautions will be observed. See you soon! By March 16, 2022--Notify the Organizer of your intent to participate in the April 16th program. By August 24, 2022--Notify the Organizer of your intent to participate in the September 24th program. Join the Organizer in sharing gratitude with these performers who have participated at least once during the past seven years: Christopher "Chris Beatz" Leath and Theo Akinyele (WSSU Alumni and classically trained Musicians); local collaborators and partners in the performing arts: Warren Newkirk (organ, piano, keyboard), Glennell Watson (electric bass), Darius Bacote (drums); Dr. (Honorary) Stephanie B. Hurt and the Royal Curtain Drama Guild which has featured: Joel Z. Hurt ("Phyusion") with special guest dancers Lawanda Lash, Jasimen Crockett, and Nicole Hauser (MIME) including LeSondra Brown (classically trained vocalist and musician) along with Julian Gordan (acoustic traditional drummer), Elyzjah King (spoken word artist), and vocalists Arren Cole (piano), Kaleb Smith, Deborah Frazier, Danielle and Donnell Sanders, as well as Kelvin Register (guitar); Joseph Daniels II (WSSU Alum, Cinnamon Reggae Band, Urban Standard II Band and Proprietor of Vision Digital Projects, formerly of and special thanks to WSNC Radio 90.5 FM--Administrative Producers Phil Allen, Bryan Anthony, the incomparable Jim Steele, and Black Radio Hall of Fame Inductee Darlene Vinson); Terry Rorie (minister, author, and hip hop gospel artist) of CARE Outreach and Discipleship Mission; Brenda G. Mays Smith and the Play-Play Production Youth Performing Arts Group along with her senior citizens rap group The Garden Bugs (Vikki Campbell, Shirley Mosely and Martha Covington); Kerry-Ann Phoenix (writer and vocalist), Hab Richardson (author and drummer); Julius Morrison (Quick Image Band); Arren Cole (piano and vocals); Kennedy Munn (violin); duo Ally J (vocals) with Kevin Clark (guitar); Greater Vision Dance Company (Wayne Jones); Nia Franklin (vocalist and former Miss America), and the phenomenal students and staff of the WSSU Music Department including Dr. Michael Magruder, Dr. Myron Brown, Maestra D’Walla Simmons-Burke, and the ensembles for choir, woodwinds, strings, brass as well as the department’s multitude of supporters.
