New Haven Man Charged In Pistol Whipping, Standoff With Police

NEW HAVEN, CT — A New Haven man was arrested on accusations he pistol whipped a woman and had a standoff with police. Jerryed Burgess, 37, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, altering or removing serial numbers on a firearm, second-degree assault, first-degree threatening, and second-degree breach of peace. He was held on $250,000 bond. A police negotiator and the SWAT team responded to the call on Anthony Street between Fountain Street and Plant Street in Westville. Following a half hour of telephone negotiation, Burgess exited his house and surrendered. According to police, the incident started hours earlier outside a residence in Fair Haven neighborhood. Investigators believe Burgess assaulted a 32-year-old New Haven woman Sunday at about 2 a.m. by hitting her in the head and face with a handgun. The assault resulted in the woman seeking medical treatment at a hospital.
