FRAMINGHAM, MA — Framingham Public Schools is postponing the return of several groups of high-needs students who were set to begin learning in school buildings in early and mid-December. The district did not give a specific reason for the delay in a brief statement on Friday, but the return of students to school buildings has depended on local coronavirus trends. On Thursday, Framingham re-joined the state's list of high-risk communities due to rising daily cases and positive test results. The district was set to welcome high-needs elementary school students on Dec. 7 followed by middle, high school and Thayer students on Dec. 14. Those students likely won't return until mid-January, the district said. "While these decisions are often difficult to make, and sometimes even harder to hear, please know that we are adjusting to new information that evolves daily, leading us to abandon previous plans at times despite hours of planning and best intentions," a statement posted on the district website Friday read. Other students with special learning needs returned to buildings in October and November. Phase four of the reopening plan is a transition to hybrid learning for general education students. That transition could happen in January depending on coronavirus trends in Framingham.
