ASHLAND, MA — Friends of a man who died after a collision along Route 135 last week are trying to raise $100,000 to help his family pay for everything from medical bills to college tuition for his children.
Jacob Handelman, 58, was riding a moped around 5 p.m. on Oct. 15 along when he was hit by a driver outside a CVS shopping plaza. He was taken to UMass Memorial in Worcester by helicopter following the collision, but died days later.
Handelman leaves behind a wife and five children, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser set up for his family. He worked as a builder and owned the Handelman Construction company in Ashland.
"Jacob was a man of service. He touched many people across many communities, including the global Insight Seminars community, Temple Sha'arei Shalom, MDI (his men's community), and many more," Pam Hoffman wrote in the fundraising appeal. "We are raising money to help his wonderful family cover medical, funeral, college, and living expenses during this time of adjustment."
As of Wednesday morning, donors had contributed just over $50,000 to the fundraiser.
