NAUGATUCK, CT — Carol Gironda, 69, of Naugatuck, has been identified as the victim of a fatal crash that closed part of Route 63 for several hours on Sunday, according to police. Emergency crews responded to the crash at the intersection of Mill Street and North Church Street (Route 63) around 3:45 p.m. on Oct. 11. Police said the preliminary crash investigation suggests a head-on collision involving a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Nissan Rogue on North Church Street where it meets Mill Street. Gironda, the driver of the Nissan Rogue, was pronounced dead by a paramedic at the scene, according to police. The passenger was taken to Waterbury Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said. The driver of the Jeep was also taken to Waterbury Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. The Naugatuck Valley Collision Investigation Team, which consists of traffic crash investigators from the regional towns of Cheshire, Middlebury, Naugatuck, Watertown, Wolcott, and Plymouth, is investigating the crash. Route 63 remained closed until about 10 p.m. when it was reopened to traffic. "No enforcement action has been taken," police said. "The cause of the collision remains under investigation." Anyone with information is asked to call lead investigator Naugatuck Sgt. Matthew Savoy at 203-729-5221.
