NAUGATUCK, CT — Democrat Jorge Cabrera has defeated Republican incumbent George Logan in the hotly contested rematch in the state Senate District 17 race. The 17th District represents parts of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck and Woodbridge. Logan won the 2018 race by around 80 votes after a recount and held a slim lead on Tuesday night. However, Cabrera said he was "encouraged by the results" as he awaited the rest of the absentee ballots. Cabrera declared victory on Wednesday night. "I am incredibly honored to be elected to represent the people of the 17th District in the Connecticut State Senate," he said in a campaign statement. "For the last two and a half years, I have held countless conversations with the people of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck and Woodbridge. In the process, I have learned so much about your passions, concerns, dreams and fears. I have met your families, neighbors, friends, and pets. Your stories moved me and gave me inspiration I needed to keep campaigning. You reminded me why I decided to run." Cabrera said he will take those stories with him to the Capitol and "continue the work of ensuring that all people of the 17th District will have access to opportunity, support, and know that with hard work comes change." Cabrera's final vote total, according to unofficial results from the Secretary of the State's office, was 24,799 while Logan received 23,119 votes. Logan said he called Cabrera on Thursday morning to congratulate him on the election win. "I have certainly enjoyed the whole experience," Logan wrote in a post on Facebook. "It's been great in terms of working with a group of such wonderful legislators, staff and especially everyone in our community to help improve the lives of folks living in the 17th Senate District and to fix Connecticut. For now, I will continue my community service work at the local level. Thank you for all your time and support. I look forward to see you around town in the near future!"
