FALMOUTH, MA — The 2020 season for the Cape Cod Baseball League has been canceled, amid the new coronavirus pandemic.
The league's executive committee announced Friday they voted unanimously to cancel the season. Cape Cod Baseball has served as an elite level collegiate summer baseball leagues since 1885 and has been a hot bed for future MLB players to get their start.
Chris Sale, Carlton Fisk, Joe Girardi, Nomar Garciaparra and Jason Varitek all played in the Cape Cod Baseball League before their Major League careers took off.
League officials said the safety of players, coaches and fans were at the root of the decision.
"Following CDC guidelines and medical recommendations, the league determined it would be impossible to guarantee the safety of players, coaches, umpires, host families, volunteers and fans during this unprecedented health crisis," a league spokesperson said in a statement. "We would like to thank all our dedicated volunteers and sponsors for their support and look forward to playing again in 2021. Thank you for your continued support and stay safe and healthy."
