His extensive experience in classroom presentation and course preparation makes for an organized and engaging learning experience. His designs have been published in knitting magazines and can be found at https://www.ravelry.com/designers/harry-wells. He managed the Northcoast Knittery in Eureka, CA from 2010-2017 and enjoys designing, including publishing patterns in magazines and on Ravelry. Registration is open to the general public as of Sunday, April 17. After April 17, all registration will default to $55.00 per class. ADDICTIVE ARGYLE! HAT PROJECT3 hours: Saturday, April 30, 9 am - Noon Love those classic diamond shapes called Argyle, but are mystified about how to accomplish them? This workshop covers the classic technique of knitting Argyle flat, by knitting a hat designed by Harry. Covered will be tips and tricks for managing the bobbins and twisting the yarns appropriately, and a seaming method that makes the seam nearly invisible and not bulky. Also covered is how to calculate designs of your own Argyle diamonds for different gauges, so you can include Argyle pretty much where ever you want! Class price: $55.00 Skill Level: Intermediate (very solid basic skills having completed some knitted project successfully) Homework: 1) This is ribbing for your hat. On straight needles, size 5 (from supply list), using MC (from supply list), CO 107. Work in K1 P1 rib for 1.5”, ending with completed RS row. (When working the ribbing: On RS, you begin and end with K1. On WS, you begin and end with P1.) Next row: P10, M1P, repeating to last 7 sts, p7. (117sts) To do M1P (make one purl): Insert the left needle from back to front into the horizontal strand between the last stitch worked and the next stitch on the left needle. Purl it through the front loop. Cut MC, leaving an 8” tail for seaming ribbing later. 2) Make two stockinette swatches with any worsted wt wool yarn: CO 16 sts and work 20 rows. Bind off and block. You will use these swatches to practice the seaming technique. Supplies Students Need to Bring to Class Straight needles,13” or 14”, Size 5.(You can use a 16” circular, but it is not recommended; it will be more difficult to work with the bobbins.) DK weight wool yarn, 4 colors. 40 grams of main color, 10 grams of CC #1 (for diamond), 10 grams of CC #2 (for diamond), 7 grams of CC #3 (for crisscross). The crisscross color should contrast with all the other colors. Also bring highlighter tape or post-it notes, stitch markers, tapestry needle that will work with DK weight yarn, small knitting bobbins (EZ Bobs recommended). 16” circular needle and DPNs, both size 5, for working crown of hat (crown will be worked beyond class time.) Handouts needed for class will be emailed (from Eventbrite) no later than Thursday, April 28th. COLORWORK THE EASY WAY! MOSAIC KNITTING AND OTHER SLIP STITCH COLORWORK 3 Hours: Saturday April 30, 1:30pm-4:30pm With Mosaic Knitting, you knit with only one color per row to achieve intricate looking patterns without stranding or intarsia wrapping. You simply knit and slip stitches, but the result is stunning! This workshop will teach you how to do several textural variations of Mosaic Knitting, how color and hues work together (or don’t), how charts are written and read differently for Mosaic Knitting, and practical tips about the best applications for Mosaic Knitting in garments and accessories. Once you learn the technique, and practice it in a swatch, you will begin a hat pattern designed by the instructor that you can quickly complete at home. An added bonus: several other colorwork slip stitch variations of garter stitch will be overviewed with color samples. You’ll be amazed what well-placed slip stitches and color changes do to garter stitch! Class price: $55.00 Skill level: Easy (Particpant has basic knitting skill: long tail cast on and completed basic stitches like K, p, k2tog, SSK, M1L with no assistance). Good for Advanced Beginner and up, very enjoyable for Intermediate Knitters too with the colorwork. Homework: This is ribbing for a Mosaic Hat pattern by the instructor. With main color (MC = darker of the two colors), using a 16” circular needle, size 6, cast on 96 sts, join in the round, and place marker at beginning of rd. Work in 1x1 rib for 2”. Leave MC attached and hanging in back.. Join CC, (k8, M1L) 12 times (108 sts) To M1L: With left needle tip, from front to back, pick up the bar between the sts now on the tips of the left and right needle. Knit this picked up st through the back loop. Continuing with CC, Purl 1 rd, then knit 1 rd. Leave on needles and bring to class. Supplies Students Need to Bring to Class US Size 6 or 7 needles, two to four small balls (25 grams each) of worsted weight wool yarn in contrasting colors for swatch practice in class, stitch markers. For Hat: 16” circular needle, size 6, worsted weight wool or wool blend yarn, 2 colors, highly contrasting, 50 grams each. MC will be darker than CC. Homework is ribbing for hat.
