"Our only requirement is that your band has a following and will draw a good crowd to your show here in west county."
This is hilarious. The cover bands with followings are touring acts and you won't be booking them on craigslist. 🙄
Here's a better idea; consistently book good music in a few select genres and become known as a place where audiences can hear good cover bands playing said genres on any given fri and sat nights. This will develop your bar's following and you won't have to depend on a guitarists co-workers, church members, and facebook friends bothering to show up.
Granted, this will require you to incentivize good, dedicated, skilled, and practiced musicians, but luckily that's not hard, it just requires your unnamed west county bar to invest in your business. In other words; PAY THEM LIKE YOU WOULD ANY OTHER ENTITY THAT MAKES YOUR ESTABLISHMENT MORE ATTRACTIVE TO PATRONS.
To my fellow musicians; working for tips and beer is an insult to the years we've spent working on our skills, the thousands of dollars we have invested in our equipment, and most importantly each other. Demand a modicum of respect or let them play a jukebox. If Saint Louis ever wants to be taken seriously as a music town again then the first step to that is making sure it takes local musicians seriously.
