FAIRHAVEN, MA — Police in Fairhaven shut down town beaches on Saturday afternoon following a shark sighting.
The sighting happened at around 1 p.m., forcing the closure of Fort Phoenix, Sconticut Neck and West Island beaches. The shark was seen near the Hacker Street beach, police said.
"The Fairhaven Harbor Master and New Bedford Police Marine Unit are currently patrolling the area," police said in a press release. "Additionally, all beachfront and waterfront residents are advised to remain out of the water until further notice."
Great white sightings have closed beaches up and down Cape Cod all summer. A great white was seen about 10 feet from the shoreline over the Labor Day weekend near Provincetown, according to eyewitnesses.
