Good morning, people of Sacramento! Jeri Karges here with a fresh issue of the Sacramento Daily. First, today's weather: Breezy; a little morning rain. High: 68 Low: 41. Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today: Police say they have arrested a person after a gun battle with officers in the south Oak Park area of Sacramento. The driver led police on a chase that spanned from Sacramento to Folsom on Friday night. The Sacramento Police Department said officers were trying to pull over a driver because of a vehicle code violation near 44th Street and 14th Avenue, but he did not stop. The driver ambushed officers and fired bullets at them. At least one officer fired back. Neither police nor the driver were injured in the shooting, police said. The person drove off after the shooting, leading officers on a chase that would go from Sacramento across Highway 50 until he abandoned his vehicle near Folsom Boulevard in the City of Folsom. Highway 50 was shut down in both directions at Prairie City Road. Police said they found the driver at Folsom Boulevard and Natomas Station Drive near the Folsom outlets around 9:20 p.m. (KCRA3) Thursday, the Sacramento Tree Foundation and many Sacramento leaders had a kick-off campaign at Robert T. Matsui Park to fundraise for the building of a cherry blossom park along the Sacramento River known as the Hanami Line. The Hanami Line would include over 100 cherry blossom trees, public art, drought-tolerant landscaping, seating, and an area to host various festivals. The Sacramento Tree Foundation plans on providing the perfect pairing of Sacramento's namesake "the City of Trees" with Japanese American culture and history, creating a fusion of nature and culture. The kick-off campaign was successful, already raising 91% of their goal of $6.95 million. (ABC10) Fire season seems to start earlier and earlier, and the Sacramento County Department of Regional Parks has already initiated its multi-pronged plan to reduce fire risk, defend wildlife habitats and protect our natural resources and the neighborhoods adjacent to the parks. For its 2022 Fire Fuel Reduction Action Plan, the Department of Regional Parks has lined up sheep and goat grazing contracts, is utilizing maintenance crews to maintain fire breaks, and is issuing fuel break maintenance permits to properties bordering Park properties. (Press Release Desk) 11-year-old Korrie Erickson is making a plea to the public: to help him track down his specialized therapeutic bike that was stolen. The bike is described as a red boys ProSeries Foot Amtyke Therapeutic Tricycle with serial #50FC1416, valued at more than $1,000. Mother, April Witt, said her son got it last summer from Shriners Hospital in Sacramento as a donation. It was being stored at Earl Warren Elementary School. Then Witt said she got a call from the school last week and learned it was gone. Someone likely stole it between March 9 and March 14, according to Sacramento police. Anyone with information can call Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-4357. (KCRA3) There is a push at city hall to change the way Sacramento thinks about—and funds—public safety by implementing youth-centered prevention services in a brand new way. City Councilmember Jay Schenirer wants the council to consider putting youth services funding under the same umbrella as police and firefighters. His proposal would have investments in youth services commensurate with investments in other public safety services. In other words, "if we do a 5% increase in police, we should also do a 5% increase in programs for young people," he said. Those services have yet to be identified, but could include anything from after school programs to workforce training.
