It is a repository for Oregon's frontier heritage. The stories change as time goes by, but the city remains one of the most diverse places in the world. Read on for a few highlights. Here's a quick overview of Portland's early days....and then read on to learn more about Portland's history! In the early 1900s, Portland was a hotbed of Ku Klux Klan activity. The group grew to over 14,000 members, and it even ousted a governor. High-ranking politicians in the state often met with Klan members. Nevertheless, the community remained diverse and was largely tolerant and welcoming. Today, Portland still has a strong black and Latino community, but this is only a small part of its rich history. Although Portland is now known as a progressive city, it is important to note that some aspects of its history are still part of its history. From the 1850s, Portland was under the control of the status quo. This was the case until the 1980s, when Portland was home to a series of police shootings of African Americans. There were even reports that the Portland police department ran over possums and put dead animals in front of black-owned restaurants. Fires, epidemics, and floods were a serious threat in the nineteenth century. In 1872, Portland's business district was burned down twice. The city also passed laws requiring all new buildings to be constructed from brick. Portland had four volunteer fire engines and an engine house that opened in 1880 at Northwest Nineteenth and Q Streets. The city paid full-time firemen in 1882, and by 1907, the number of firefighters had doubled. The city's population grew by one-third between 1940 and 1943. In the years that followed, the shipyards declined and residents moved elsewhere. However, this increased population meant that the city had to adapt to new challenges. The city's municipal institutions struggled to meet the demands of the new residents, and it eventually fell into decline. In the 1950s, its political habits were changed. While Dorothy McCullough Lee was the first reform mayor, George Baker, Earl Riley, and Fred Peterson served as mayors of Portland. The first inhabitants of Portland included the Clackamas, Multnomah, and Kathlamet tribes. These people established seasonal traditions along the Willamette River and later on, pioneers began to venture west along the Oregon Trail. Now, Portland has a rich history, largely rooted in the early years of the city. This article provides a brief overview of Portland's history. There is even a time when the town was a mere grove of trees. After the Civil War, Portland's name changed. Henry Kaiser had made a deal with the British Navy to build ships before the war. He sought out Portland for a shipyard because of the city's proximity to the Bonneville Dam. After his successful launch, Kaiser created the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation. This organization would become one of the largest shipbuilding operations in the country, employing unskilled labor. In the 1940s, Portland became the epicenter of shipbuilding.
