Easton Police Warn Residents Of 'Grandchild In Jail' Scam

EASTON, MA — Easton police said several elderly residents have fallen victim to a familiar scam in which older individuals are contacted and told that they need to pay money to help a young relative get out of jail. The "Grandchild in Jail" scam, as Easton police called it, involves a grandparent being contacted and told that money is required for an attorney or bail to get a grandchild out of jail. Often, they are told to wire money or give banking information, and sometimes will pretend to be local police. Those perpetrating the scam can come back to the older resident for multiple payments as long as the scam is successful. "These scam artists prey on the emotions and fear that's created when someone believes a loved one is in trouble and needs help," Easton police said. "If you receive a call of this kind and a request for cash, please take a moment and try to learn the identity of the person who's contacting you to determine the validity." Residents are always reminded not to provide money or banking information to anyone who contacts them through an unsolicited phone call or email.
