More than 4.3 million refugees have fled Ukraine since the devastating war began, and more than 6.5 million people have been displaced within Ukraine. We have all felt powerless to do anything to help while watching the devastation unfold from the other side of the world. As musicians we believe in the power of music to connect people in the common desire to aid those most in need. We wish to express solidarity with the people of Ukraine through the celebration of its rich musical heritage. A vibrant culture cannot be destroyed by war. These Concerts for Peace are unique in that each will feature chamber music written by Ukrainian composers, many unpublished in the West and unknown to most people outside Ukraine. It has been a joy for us to learn this repertoire and share it with you. We especially want to thank Dr. Solomiya Ivakhiv for providing us with the score of the Barvinsky piano trio, and Simon Wynberg for the score of the Klebabov string quartet. This concert would not be possible without the support of our generous underwriters Susan Thompson and Gordon Brodfuehrer, and our host Campbell Learning Center. Most of all we want to thank all the musicians who are participating in this benefit concert, many of whom have close ties to Ukraine. We stand with them. These musicians, representing the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, University of Houston Moores School of Music, and Campbell Learning Center, have joined forces to share with you chamber music by Ukrainian composers Valentin Silvestrov, Myroslav Skoryk, Mykola Lysenko, Dmitri Klebanov, Vasyl Barvinsky, and more.
