MIDDLETOWN, CT — The number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in Middletown is 320 as of Thursday, according to the latest numbers. The state health department reports 39 residents have died as a result of complications from the new coronavirus.
The number of confirmed cases in Middletown increased by 17 from the previous day, while there were no additional reported deaths and hospitalizations increased by five to 42, according to Mayor Ben Florsheim.
Connecticut has 27,700 total confirmed coronavirus cases, 2,257 deaths and 1,650 hospitalizations. Hospitalizations declined in Connecticut for the eighth straight day.
Gov. Ned Lamont said Thursday that "Main Street retail businesses" such as shoe, toy, jewelry, and boutique stores will be allowed to reopen on May 20, as long as they meet safety and social distancing requirements.
Lamont said restaurants would be allowed to open on May 20 for outdoor dining only. Bar areas would remain closed.
Florsheim said Middletown is assembling a local reopening working group to provide "detailed local guidance" to establishments Lamont mentioned.
"We will also be closely following the experiences of other states that have opened earlier," Florsheim said in a post on Facebook. "Early reports indicate that even in states that are already opening up, people are mostly 'self-policing' and restricting their exposure to others as much as possible. Until otherwise noted, the best course of action is still STAY SAFE, STAY HOME."
