REDMOND, WA — Redmond neighbors can get their catalytic converters etched and painted for free later this month, as part of a new effort to make the devices less appealing to thieves. Law enforcement agencies across the region have warned of a spike in catalytic converter thefts in recent months, and repairs can cost vehicle owners thousands. According to the Redmond Police Department, residents reported more than $210,000 in losses due to such thefts in 2021. Earlier this year, Redmond joined Bellevue and other Eastside agencies in forming a special task force to track down suspected thieves, which netted several arrests. Another facet of the plan is hosting free etching events, which make the devices easier to track and harder to sell. Following similar events in Bellevue and Renton, Redmond neighbors are invited to attend a community etching and painting event on April 23 at the city's maintenance operations center. Organizers said spaces for the event were likely to fill up fast and encouraged neighbors to register for a free slot online.
