The Gault Center South (formerly the Southern Juvenile Defender Center) welcomes you to our 12th annual regional summit in Montgomery! The Gault Center South (formerly the Southern Juvenile Defender Center) welcomes you to our twelfth annual regional summit, held at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center in Montgomery, Alabama. We invite you to come together with your colleagues from across the Southern states to participate in this one-of-a-kind program. New to this year's list of southern states are Tennessee, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands - welcome! Scholarship Information: For out-of-state attorneys, partial scholarship assistance may be available, pending funding approval, to cover lodging expenses on a first come, first served basis. Scholarship recipients must be willing to share a two-bed hotel room with another attendee and pay $25 each per night toward the cost of the room. Scholarship Inquiry Deadline: May 6th, 2022 Lodging Information: A block of rooms has been reserved at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center located at 201 Tallapoosa St, Montgomery, AL 36104 at a special group rate of $149.00/night plus tax. To book a room at the group rate for Thursday and Friday night, follow this link or contact the hotel at 1-800-468-357 and identify yourself as an attendee of the 2022 Southern Juvenile Defender Summit. (Note: anyone wishing to book a room at the group rate for Wednesday night should call (334) 481-5000 and ask to speak with the event manager Britni Chappell.) A major credit card must be provided to guarantee your reservation. A 24-hour cancellation notice is required to avoid a penalty. To guarantee the group rate, we ask that you reserve your room by Friday, May 6th, 2022. Parking rates are an additional $16/night. Meals: Breakfast will be provided Friday and Saturday. Lunch will be provided during the summit on Friday, and a reception will be held Friday evening. *No DOJ funds will be used for food or beverage. Please register for the Summit by May 20th, 2022. Note: There is no charge for registration, but failure to cancel your registration for the Gault Center South Regional Summit by May 27, 2022 will result in a $100.00 fee payable to GCS. Extenuating circumstances may be considered in the sole discretion of the Advisory Committee. CLE Credits will been applied for. You will be responsible for paying for your own CLE credits directly to the bar. EJI Legacy Museum & National Memorial for Peace and Justice Gault Center South has arranged for group admission to the EJI Legacy Museum & National Memorial for Peace and Justice on Thursday, June 2nd, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. (The group rate is at a reduced cost of $5 per attendee.) Please indicate within the registration questions as to whether you plan to attend. More information about the museum and memorial can be found here: https://museumandmemorial.eji.org/ 2022 Topics This year's summit will be centered around racial justice topics prevalent in the juvenile justice system. We are excited to host keynote speaker Bryan Stevenson, founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative, as well as special guest Kristin Henning, Blume Professor of Law and Director of the Juvenile Justice Clinic and Initiative at Georgetown Law. Other sessions will cover topics such as Defending Gang Activity Cases, Disciplinary Hearings, Grief and Trauma, and Difficult Conversations. COVID-19 Precautions Gault Center South is following CDC Guidelines for the 2022 Summit. At this time, the Summit will be in-person and we are closely monitoring all developments and guidelines. While we are hopeful that the pandemic conditions will only continue to improve, we recognize the unpredictable nature of the current circumstances.
