MIDDLETOWN, CT — Some residents were temporarily evacuated from their homes due to a gas leak Sunday afternoon in the southern district of Middletown, according to fire officials.
"Yesterday afternoon, Platoon A responded with Engine 30 & Engine 32 to a report of a ruptured natural gas line," officials wrote in a post on the South Fire District Firefighters IAFF Local 3918 union's Facebook page. "Units arrived to find a broken gas line and active leak. Eversource CT gas was requested on a Priority 1 response and area homes were evacuated. The leak was isolated a short time later and residents returned to their homes."
The gas line was severed when workers were digging a trench next to the home, according to officials.
"Remember, anytime work is being performed underground by you or your contractor, you are required by law to contact Call 811 Before You Dig. More information can be found at www.cbyd.com," officials said. "This incident could have had a catastrophic outcome. If you ever smell natural gas or propane, leave the area immediately and call 911."
