Here are the top five stories today in Concord: On February 10, the Contra Costa County Superior Court handed Save Mount Diablo a major victory in its legal challenge to the City of Pittsburg's approval of the 1,650-unit Faria/Southwest Hills project. In late February, attorneys representing Discovery Builders and their Faria project requested a new trial. On April 4, the Contra Costa Superior Court handed Save Mount Diablo another significant victory when it rejected all of Seeno/Discovery Builders' arguments and request for a retrial. The court reaffirmed that the environmental impact report (EIR) for the proposed project violated the law as Save Mount Diablo had originally argued. (East County Today)With spring in the air and pandemic restrictions easing, two local garden tours return to showcase the East Bay's beauty. The Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour will begin with an online event April 16-17 and then in-person tours April 30 and May 1. The Clayton Gardens Tour will feature five homes on May 6-7. Four Clayton and two Concord gardens will be included 10 a.m.-5 p.m. May 1. Tours are free but donations are accepted. Pre-register at bringingbackthenatives.net. The purpose is to receive detailed reports about key issues and to have an open dialogue about the top priorities for the year ahead. (Pioneer Publishers)With the help of a mentorship program led by Kaiser Permanente Northern California's Mental Health Training Program, students at Dozier-Libbey Medical High School in Antioch are getting a window into the behavioral health medical profession. Kaiser Permanente Northern California partnered with the 800-student high school last year to create a mentorship program in which 12 students meet virtually every week for 30 minutes with a mental health provider to talk about career pathways, resumes, college, and the realities of working as a mental health professional. Every mental health trainee of the Mental Health Training Program is required to complete over 30 hours of community outreach. The outreach focuses on improving the mental health of the local community in some important respect, beyond treating Kaiser Permanente members. (Contra Costa Herald)Walnut Creek police are investigating a robbery of the Ashland Smoke Shop at 2931 N Main Street Thursday afternoon. Employees said the passenger of a blue Jeep Grand Cherokee or Wrangler left the vehicle and entered the business at 6:10 p.m., telling workers he was armed with a handgun though no weapon was seen. The robber left the store with an unknown quantity of stolen goods or cash. There were no reported injuries. (News 24/680) Today in Concord: Take your best friend to Puppy Head Start class! The City Council set aside $180,000 to support local nonprofits. The City is now accepting applications from registered nonprofits for projects that meet grant guidelines and are aligned with the City's goals and priorities. The maximum award of the one-time grants is $15,000. Applications are due by noon on May 19.
