METRO DETROIT — Nearly 19,000 people in the metro Detroit area were without power Thursday due to high winds, according to the DTE outage map. The largest outage was in Oakland County, where 5,325 customers lost their power Thursday afternoon. The Southfield area was the largest hit with over 1,500 residents without power, according to DTE. Wayne County saw 1,920 power outages, with large outages reported in the Livonia and Redford areas, according to DTE. DTE said there were 239 crews working in the field to restore power. Consumers Energy said over 29,500 customers across Michigan were without power Thursday afternoon, with the largest outage in Allegan County at 5,079. A high wind advisory was in effect for Southeastern Michigan until 8 p.m. Thursday. The National Weather Service warned wind gusts could reach 60 miles per hour Thursday afternoon and evening. Two Democratic lawmakers recently introduced legislation would force utility companies to pay for power outages in southeast Michigan and statewide.
