ESF Readies To Celebrate Earth Week

Press release from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry: April 15, 2022 The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), the most distinguished institution in the nation that focuses on the study of the environment, will celebrate Earth Week with a full slate of events planned to celebrate the Earth, and call attention to environmental and social justice issues. This year's events include lectures on conservation and mass extinctions, Indigenous teachings, community clean-ups, an environmental justice panel, a birds of prey exhibit, and a music festival. This is also the first year since 2019 the schedule is fully in-person following two years of COVID restrictions. "Our students take the lead in planning our Earth Week activities that celebrate, educate, and advocate for the Earth," said ESF President Joanie Mahoney. "The depth and breadth of the topics being addressed are a testament to our students' commitment to improving their world and finding solutions to our most pressing environmental issues." To help raise awareness about the Earth on campus, students have planned the following interactive activities: Earth Week Market, April 20State of Sustainability, April 20Earth Week Keynote: Indigenous Teachings for Kinship with the Natural World, with Dr. Robin Kimmerer and Tom Porter, Mohawk spiritual leader, teacher, and author, April 21Global Conservation Lecture with Dr. Stuart Pimm, April 21Quadstock Music Festival, April 22 Along with celebrating Earth Day on April 22, the College will mark SUNY ESF Day as proclaimed by the City of Syracuse and Onondaga County in 2020, marking the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and the contributions ESF has made to local, state, and national environmental and sustainability efforts. In recognition, it was proclaimed that Earth Day in the City of Syracuse and Onondaga County would also be known as SUNY ESF Day. Event details are available on the ESF Earth Week calendar.
