WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield Schools Superintendent Margaret Dolan announced Wednesday that on Thursday, with a nor'easter predicted and possibly a foot of snow in Westfield, students will have all-remote learning that day for the morning session, and no afternoon session. Dolan said in her announcement: Thursday: "As heavy snow and strong winds are expected overnight, all students and staff will pivot to all-remote learning tomorrow (Thursday), Dec. 17 for the morning session only. Afternoon sessions are canceled. Should power outages or other disruptions necessitate a change to this plan, I will update you." Friday: "With the hard work of our Buildings and Grounds staff, we plan to resume hybrid, in-person instruction on Friday. Thank you for your patience as we navigate this storm in the middle of a pandemic. Please stay safe and warm!" The forecast specifically for Westfield calls for snow to begin around 4 p.m., accumulating 3-6 inches in the afternoon and as much as an additional 4-8 inches overnight and into Thursday morning. Should kids have off for snow? Various districts began releasing their snow plans over the weekend, a mix of remote learning and traditional days off. Two superintendents in New Jersey said Monday that they felt kids deserve a traditional Snow Day off after a tough year. Mahwah's superintendent said the days are for "memory making" and not remote learning. In Cinnaminson, the superintendent said, "Far too many chances for them to play and 'just be a kid' have been taken from them over the last nine months. It will be nice to see them enjoy one of the true gifts of childhood." Got a pic of the snow? Email [email protected]. Please provide written permission from the photographer for us to use the photo.
