I need help/advice about scanning old negatives

I have negative strips of all shapes and sizes going back to the 1970s. I've been storing them in protective plastic sheets, so I'm hoping they're still in good condition. Can anybody give me help and/or advice about scanning them. My old CanoScan 8600F is not state of the art any more and I suspect some dust and dirt has collected inside. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
