Kennedy Student Arrested After False Active Shooter Report: Cops

WHEATON, MD — A student at John F. Kennedy High School in Wheaton was arrested after police say he falsely reported an active shooter on campus. The male student, whom police did not identify, was charged with making threats of mass violence, disruption of school activities, and making false statements to police, authorities said. Around 2:10 p.m. on Thursday, a 9-1-1 center received a call from an unknown caller who stated there was an active shooter at 1901 Randolph Rd. Montgomery County police said law enforcement and school officials "took immediate action to determine the validity of the call," but quickly determined that the threat, made by the student, was not valid. Authorities say all threats directed toward other students and the school community — even if it is a prank — will be taken serious. "The Montgomery County Department of Police fully investigates each threat and works to identify the person or persons responsible for making the threat," police said in a statement. "If a person makes threats, regardless whether it is a prank, he/she can be criminally charged." Police added that they will see prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.
