Email [email protected] If you're interested in camping with some classmates while in the Bend area , you can thank Dan McCullough for finding a remote but not too far away from the festivities place to RV. Here's Dans info on it: Klawhop Butte camp spot https://goo.gl/maps/MoNEKbcozegF6tBH7 Summary: Klawhop Butte is a cinder cone formed from Newberry Crater. Location is about 10 miles south of Bend, and 4 miles east of Lava Butte. The camp spot is a fairly level open area on the NE base of the butte, left over from earlier excavation. Specifics: Amenities: None. Bring your own toilet/water. Elevation: 5035’ at camp spot, 5470’ at top of butte Surface: Black cinder gravel & dirt Size: Approximately 300 ft x 50 ft Phone service: One to two bars of 3G. Voice & text, no internet (Verizon). There is LTE on top of the butte. Strength of signal for other service providers is unknown. Directions: Our test travel time was 25 minutes from Baker Rd to the camp spot, and 19 minutes returning to Baker Rd. From Bend: Travel south on Hwy 97 to Exit 143 at Baker Road. Mark your mileage. Continue south on Hwy 97 8.4 miles, and turn off at Exit 151 (Cottonwood). Bear left where the exit ramp splits. At the stop sign, turn left on Cottonwood, pass under Hwy 97, and turn left to get back on Hwy 97 going north. After 3 miles, turn right on USFS Road 9710 (main gravel road, 40 mph). Follow USFS 9710 4 miles to USFS Road 360 (unimproved road, but easy traveling). Follow Road 360 1.3 miles to the camp spot. Return to Bend: Backtrack to Hwy 97, and turn right. Klawhop Butte has two craters. A steep trail to the top begins at the south end of the camp spot, and you can circumnavigate the craters. The local forest has lava outcroppings, mature Ponderosa, Lodgepole, and fir trees. Bike riding is available on the forest roads, and you can hike in all directions. There’s a USFS water guzzler nearby for critters. Forest bumblebees and butterflies are plentiful in the area – these are mellow & gentle creatures. Newberry Crater, Lava Butte, & other features of the National Monument are nearby. Advisories: No fires or fireworks are allowed in the forest in July. Propane warmers and fireplaces are OK. If you want to explore, there are plenty of opportunities to get lost. Suggest bringing map & compass, GPS, and/or navigation app for your phone. We'll assume there won't be snow there in July! :)
