Description

Vivaldi's "Fall & Winter" Presented by top Bay Area Baroque Musicians Pacific Union College violin and viola major James Woodward presents his senior violin recital on Sunday, April 24, at 4 p.m. The repertoire will include two of the most famous Baroque era pieces: Fall and Winter from Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. This event is free (no tickets required) and open to the public. Accompanying Woodward on the Vivaldi are some of the Bay Area’s top Baroque musicians: Jon Mendle on plucked strings; Caitlyn Koester on harpsichord improvised continuo; Rocío López Sánchez on cello; Anna Washburn on violin; and Rachelle Berthelsen-Davis on violin. Woodward will be playing on a violin fitted with Baroque-style gut strings, using a Baroque-style bow. The Four Seasons was composed around 1718-1720. It is the best-known of Vivaldi’s works, and was revolutionary for its time, as each movement depicts specific seasonal scenes, with different musical sounds depicting pieces of nature such as flowing creeks, singing birds, a barking dog, buzzing flies, storms, frozen landscapes, and warm winter fires. During this April 24 recital, Woodward and his fellow musicians will present a delightful and authentic performance with an aim to transport the audience to places in their minds where the feelings associated with fall and winter come alive through music. Woodward has been a student of Berthelsen-Davis for the past several years while studying music at Pacific Union College. He gave a senior recital on viola in the fall of 2021, and the completion of this recital on violin will satisfy the requirements for graduation with a B.S. degree in music with a performance emphasis.
