LACAAEA and APCF Launch New Speaker Series to Boost AAPI Civic Engagement - Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis To Be Featured The Los Angeles County Asian American Employees Association (LACAAEA) and Asian Pacific Community Fund (APCF) announced a new speaker series called “Leading by Example” in response to a recent Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community survey revealing that the AAPI community are more civically engaged as a result of the racial discrimination brought on due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey released by the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs at Cal State LA and the California Community Foundation pointed to potential gaps in current political outreach efforts to AAPI voters, with 58% of respondents saying they have not been contacted about voting or registering to vote in the last two years. The percentage who reported not being contacted was even higher for foreign-born respondents at 65%. To help amplify policy discussions and introduce County of Los Angeles leadership to the AAPI community, the first “Leading by Example” event will be held on April 30th at 10 a.m. at the Ramada by Wyndham in South El Monte. The event will include a screening of the documentary “The Race Epidemic, Resurgence of the Yellow Peril,” a film by Tony Shyu, and will feature First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, who represents 27% AAPI residents of the First District - the highest in any district. The registration and breakfast at the April 30th event will start at 9:30 am, with the event to begin at 10 am. RSVP is requested to ensure availability, but the event is being provided free of cost. AAPI community organizations are encouraged to build relationships with their local government. The event will offer AAPI organizations throughout Los Angeles County, but especially those located in the First District (please click here for First District boundaries) to include their names and contact information in a directory to be shared with County and local government stakeholders. Any AAPI community organization interested in hosting a table to share information about their organization should email [email protected] to inquire about availability as space is limited.
