Rock Steady Boxing is a nonprofit organization founded in 2006 that gives people with Parkinson’s Disease hope by improving their quality of life through a non-contact boxing-based fitness curriculum. As the first boxing program of its kind in the country, Rock Steady provides boxing focused workout classes to people who suffer from Parkinson's disease. Their classes are designed to meet the fitness levels at all stages of Parkinson’s (from the newly diagnosed to those who had been living with it for many decades) and are designed to attack Parkinson’s at its vulnerable neurological points. Why Boxing? Various studies have supported the notion that rigorous exercise emphasizing gross motor movement, balance, core strength, and rhythm can favorably impact the range of motion, posture, gait, and the activities of daily life of those living with Parkinson's. Some more recent studies (most notably at Cleveland Clinic) have even suggested that this kind of exercise may be neuro-protective and can actually slow the progression of the disease. Rock Steady clients are a living example of this. Members of their group have not only reported improved physical symptoms- but have also experienced tremendous psychological improvements from the confidence they have gained during this exercise. While a permanent cure for PD may be many years away, the members of Rock Steady Boxing have experienced progression in all facets of their disease. We are extremely excited to be teaming up with Rock Steady on April 24th and look forward to continuing to team up with them in the future to knockout Parkinsons's.
