Man Who Removed Monitoring Device Apprehended In Manchester

MANCHESTER, CT — A man who had cut off a court-ordered electronic monitoring device and mailed it back to authorities was picked up in Manchester Thursday on 11 warrants, state police said. Michael Gramegna was taken into custody at about 1 p.m. and his bail was set at $5.3 million while waiting an appearance at Rockville Superior Court, state police said. State police mentioned no specific address for Gramegna, but Manchester police said he has owned property in their town and Bolton. On Nov. 30, officers from the state police Eastern Major District Crime Squad were notified by the state probation division that Gramegna had removed his ankle tracking device and mailed it to its office. Gramegna had been wearing the device after posting hundreds of thousands worth of bonds in cases that ranged from weapons violations to assault to interfering with police to creating a public disturbance, records show. He has an entire page of current cases in the judicial system website. State police, Manchester police, Vernon police and the FBI had been working on efforts to track him down, according to a report. He was finally spotted and taken into custody Thursday in Manchester. He was charged with 11 failure to appear violations and a single count of violating a protective order.
