Despite tornado warnings and dangerous weather in Carroll County this past Monday morning February 9, the sun was shining at Heritage Honda Westminster on Baltimore Boulevard where General Manager Mike McGuire was handing over the keys for a new Honda CR-V EX to the winner of the 20th annual American Cancer Society MileOne Autogroup raffle! Kathy Miller of Halethorpe, who lost her husband to cancer in 2017, won the annual MileOne Autogroup car raffle that has raised more than $2.2 million in funds over two decades for the American Cancer Society to fight cancer. Miller, a bartender at Spirit West in Baltimore, purchased two raffle tickets at an annual breastcancer fundraiser held at Spirit West last October for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life event of Catonsville. Last summer, Kathy's car was totaled, and she had been relying on friends and driving her mother-in-law's old car to get around. The new Honda is more than this grandmother of five dreamed of. "I was saving up by myself to shop for a used car in the new year, so this is amazing," says Miller, who is the first raffle winner in the past 10 years to choose the car over the $20,000 cash option. More than 4,500 raffle tickets at $10 each were sold in 2019, raising funds devoted to providing transportation to treatment for local cancer patients through the MileOne Travel to Treatment program, an extension of ACS's Road to Recovery program. During 2019, MileOne Autogroup donated $26,000 from the 2018 car raffle to specifically help more cancer patient have rides to treatment. Over the years, MileOne Autogroup has not only raised a total of more than $3 million for the American Cancer Society through the car raffle and other activities, but MileOne also has donated two patient transportation vans to Baltimore Hope Lodge, which have logged more than 88,000 miles taking patients from Hope Lodge to their cancer treatment in Baltimore. Hope Lodge provides a home-away-from-home at no cost to out-of-town cancer patients receiving treatment in Baltimore. The American Cancer Society car raffle was established by former MileOne Automotive CEO Jerry Fader, who lost his battle with cancer in 2011. His legacy has been preserved by his family and three sons, Steve, Scott and Brian Fader. Through their efforts and with the help of MileOne Autogroup and its employees, they continue to support the American Cancer Society in many ways. An additional way they show their generosity is that every month a group of MileOne Autogroup employees host a dinner for the guests staying at Baltimore Hope Lodge.
