Norwood Fishing Derby Returns On April 23 After Pandemic Hiatus

NORWOOD, MA - Families fishing for a fun youth activity can participate in the Lou Santoro Memorial Fishing Derby on the morning of Saturday, April 23 as the tradition returns to Norwood after being paused during the pandemic. The event, sponsored by the Norwood Sportsmen's Association, will take place at Guild Pond, located behind the group's headquarters at 576 Nichols St. Registration will be held from 8-9 a.m.. There is a $2 entrance fee which includes a doughnut, hot dog, soda and chips. The derby will begin at 9 a.m. and last for two hours. "There are few locations in our area where a youngster can put a line in the water to try and catch a fish," said former Selectman Allan Howard, who is a member of the association. "Sowith COVID the last two years, our club was closed. We are so excited to be active again this year." He added that members will be stocking the pond with trout before the event. Participants in the fishing derby can only use worms - no flies or lures. Santoro, also known as "Woody," was a lifelong Norwood resident who died at the age of 83 on February 11, 2018. According to his obituary, he was a lifelong member and past president of the Norwood Sportsmen's Association. He also was a member of the Norfolk County League of Sportsmen's Clubs, where he was awarded the Massachusetts Sportsman Of The Year award two times.
