By John Gibson, WNIN April 14, 2022 A historic, century-old building has been transformed into loft apartments in Downtown Evansville. Officials cut a ribbon, opening Central Lofts in the former home of the YMCA on 5th St. Developer Jon Anderson of Indianapolis led the renovation of the five-story structure. He said many residents have already moved in to the income-based apartments: "62 apartments behind us, last I heard 26 have already been leased. So, a really great response to this project since we opened three weeks ago." Before the ribbon was cut, Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke touted the building's new purpose: "This was designed by Clifford Shopbell and completed in 1914. It served our community for nearly 100 years. But today it really has a nice new purpose and that is safe, secure housing for people who are income-challenged." The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority awarded the Promise Zone project more $1.1 million in tax credits. WNIN is the NPR/PBS affiliate in Evansville, Indiana.
