Press release from City of Moorpark: April 12, 2022 Throughout the month of April, Moorpark is participating in a nationwide challenge to be "water wise." Despite a rainy December, rainfall is down this season. As a result, it is now more important than ever to make water use reductions part of daily life. Moorpark and communities across the country are asking residents to take part in the annual Wyland National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation. This non-profit national community service campaign encourages residents to use water more efficiently, reduce pollution, and save energy. By making a pledge, residents can win $3,000 toward their home utility payments, water saving fixtures, or other prizes. Plus, one lucky charity will receive a 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid to help serve the winning city's community. Since 2019, Moorpark has joined the challenge and (out of more than 550 cities with 30-99K residents) has ranked in top third each year: #199 in 2019, #203 in 2020, and #141 in 2021. This year, Moorpark would like to involve more citizens in the water challenge. Participating in the online activity is easy and simply involves making a series of simple pledges at mywaterpledge.com to use water more efficiently, reduce pollution, and save energy. More ways to participate include community group projects and individual projects with details on the pledge website. The Challenge goes beyond drought issues and looks at the future of our communities' water use from growing food to reducing polluted runoff. The online pledges illustrate how actions that seemingly have nothing to do with water, like saving electricity, recycling, and wasting less food, actually have a significant impact on water. Only 2 of the 17 pledges specifically reference water, a pledge to run full loads of laundry/dishes and to take shorter showers. Moorpark Mayor Janice Parvin stated: "Moorpark citizens are great stewards of the environment, and I know we can all rally together to take the pledge and preserve our water supply." The National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation is presented by the Wyland Foundation and Toyota and in association with The Toro Company, EPA WaterSense, National League of Cities, Conserva Irrigation, and Earth Friendly Products (makers of ECOS). The Challenge encourages residents to follow their city's progress throughout the month and to use that information to encourage friends, neighbors, businesses, and civic groups to get involved.
