Description
The Florida State University (FSU) Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) department seeks to fill an Assistant Lab Animal Technician position. The incumbent plays an integral role in ensuring research animals and facilities are maintained consistent with exemplary standards of animal care. Under immediate supervision, the incumbent provides routine husbandry and care of research animals. - Responsibilities also include cage sanitation and preparation for reuse. Requires understanding and compliance with departmental and institutional policies and procedures, as well as the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and regulations set forth in the United States Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act and Regulations. - Takes necessary precautions to adhere to OSHA standards, other applicable federal and state regulations, and departmental standard operating procedures when working with hazardous agents, animals, and power equipment. Requires work on weekends and holidays on a rotational basis. - Provides diligent and responsible animal care. Feeds and waters animals. Changes and cleans cages. Sanitizes equipment and facilities. - Records and reports animal abnormalities including altered eating, drinking, waste elimination, behavior, superficial lesions, and/or death. - Assists with technical procedures including record keeping, animal identification, breeding, sexing, specimen collection, preparing diets, and euthanasia. Records and reports environmental abnormalities. - Provides routine physical maintenance of assigned areas. Performs other duties as assigned. Performs routine duties associated with cage sanitation and preparation for reuse in a research setting including cage maintenance, monitoring equipment for proper function and maintaining sanitary conditions. - Operates mechanical washers and ensures cage washing and related equipment are in proper working order. Performs routine start-up and shut down procedures. Operates autoclaves to sterilize or decontaminate caging and equipment. Assists in receiving and storing materials, food, and supplies. - Transports animals, caging, and supplies between animal rooms and facilities. Maintains sanitary condition of cage wash facilities and other ancillary areas including corridors and storage rooms. May assist in training other LAR personnel. Works independently. Qualifications - High school diploma/equivalent and two years of relevant experience. (Note: Post-high school education may substitute for experience at the comparable rate). - AALAS certification at ALAT level. An incumbent without ALAT certification must achieve certification within 6 months of eligibility. - Must be able to perform physical tasks, such as gripping, reaching, bending, and have ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds. - Must be willing to work on a rotational schedule with other technicians to cover holidays and weekends. - Valid driver's license with the ability to obtain a Florida/Georgia driver's license. Preferred - Some post-secondary education. - Prior animal industry or research experience. Anticipated Salary Range Anticipated salary range between $33,950 - $35,650 depending on experience. Schedule Full-time. Additionally, the incumbent is expected to work on a rotational schedule with other technicians to cover holidays and weekends. Schedules are flexed accordingly. The background check will be conducted as authorized and in accordance with University Policy 4-OP-C-7-B11.
