You are correct in that you can play "scales" and convey harmonic information. Guitarist learn chords with too many notes. They don't understand chords are TRIADS and can even be DIADS. Harmony isn't always 6 voices. Guitarist are the only folks who do this. I can show you some exercises. Respond to this if you're interested.
