DUI Driver Charged After Crash In Hamden: Police

HAMDEN, CT — A Hamden man is accused of operating under the influence in connection with a crash that sent another driver to the hospital, according to police. Police responded to the intersection at Dixwell Avenue and Skiff Street around 2 p.m. on Dec. 22 on the report of an accident with injuries, according to Capt. Ronald Smith. Smith said a vehicle that was being driven by Thomas Dougherty struck the rear of another vehicle. The driver of the vehicle that was struck, a 22-year-old Hamden resident, was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with a head injury, according to Smith. Police found that Dougherty was under the influence of narcotics, according to Smith. Several items were seized from Dougherty's vehicle, including, 6.8 grams of crystal methamphetamine, pills (Clonazepam, Adderall, Xanax) and a bottle of Methadone, Smith said. Dougherty, 32, of Mather Street, was charged with driving under the influence, operating without insurance and following too closely. He was criminally charged with six counts of possession of a controlled substance, according to Smith. Dougherty was released after posting a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 23.
