SILVER SPRING, MD — Montgomery County Recreation has canceled all of its summer camps and programs amid concerns over the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The recreation department announced the decision on Wednesday, saying it will refund families and continue to work with county and state officials on potential future solutions. "Our team is ready to provide services and welcome the community back to our facilities, but we will not do so until it is safe," said Recreation Director Robin Riley said. "Once we receive guidance from State officials, we will work closely with our local public health officials to determine the appropriate methods and timing to reopen our facilities and programs." In the meantime, recreation officials say they are developing contingency plans for new camps in the age of COVID-19. It is not yet clear what those offerings will look like. As families hunker down at home and look for ways to entertain children, the department has launched "Rec Room." The virtual recreation hub offers DIY arts and crafts, fitness videos, virtual trips and tours, and other creative recreational ideas for the whole family. Click here to learn more about "Rec Room."
