SILVER SPRING, MD — About 25 percent of Montgomery County's COVID-19 cases total come from three Silver Spring-area ZIP codes, official public health data shows.
The three ZIP codes with the highest number of confirmed infections are:
20906 (Aspen Hill/Layhill) — 3,849 cases20902 (Wheaton) — 2,867 cases20904 (Colesville) — 2,682 cases With a combined total of 9,398 infections, these three ZIP codes account for 25.26 percent of Montgomery County's cases.
The county added 343 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, pushing its overall total to 37,194, according to the Maryland Department of Health.
This month alone, there have been seven days in which the county has recorded more than 300 infections. The county shattered its single-daily record for new COVID-19 infections on Dec. 4 — with 631 reported cases.
On Wednesday, health officials recorded seven new deaths tied to COVID-19, bringing the local death toll to 956. The latest fatality count does not include the 44 others whose deaths were linked to the virus, but never confirmed by a lab test. For now, they are considered "probable deaths."
The county — which is home to roughly 1 million residents — continues to have the highest number of deaths in the state. It also has the second highest number of confirmed cases, after Prince George's County, which has 45,345, according to the latest figures.
Statewide, there have been 222,653 cases, 4,801 confirmed deaths, and 161 "probable deaths." Of the 1,715 people currently being hospitalized, 416 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
