New Traffic Light In Silver Spring To Activate Thursday

SILVER SPRING, MD — A new traffic and pedestrian signal in Silver Spring will be activated this week, according to a release from the Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration (MODT SHA). The new signal, at the intersection of May Street and Rippling Brook Drive with MD97. Starting Monday, the signal will be in a mandatory three-day "flash mode" which is meant to familiarize drivers with the system. "This new signal will slow down traffic on this busy corridor and provide a controlled, safe pedestrian crossing," MDOT SHA administrator Greg Slater said in the release. "We are working diligently to install features to improve safety in our urban areas such as lower speed limits, additional signage, improved markings and bike lanes." Crosswalks have also been installed across all three roadways at the intersection. "MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for motorists, as well as our crews. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and, look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Drive like you work here and slowdown in construction zones," the release says.
